Job Summary
The Phlebotomist is responsible for inpatient, outpatient and off-site blood specimen collections using proper phlebotomy technique while ensuring correct patient and specimen identification. Also performs secretarial duties as directed by department schedule.
Responsibilities And Scope
Ensures competency in all required skills and completes competency assessment annually; and other assignments as requested. Works to fulfill all departmental goals by completing annual organizational educational offerings, fulfilling individual continuing education requirements, as well as participating in section monitors, assignments, committees, projects or community activities.
Utilizes the defined collection processes in the varied collection environments (Rover for IP collections, Epic schedule for OP collections, and requisitions for CLS collections) to ensure that all requirements are met for the proper specimen on the proper patient. Follows collection guidelines regarding collection priority (stat, timed, routine) and that all special handling requirements are met.
Ensures the proper completion of order requests, from all points of entry whether electronic or paper. Validates proper encounter selection, that all collection data is documented and that all required information (fax request, ICD-10, etc.) is validated before completing the collection/order process.
Collects blood from the correct patient and properly labels, or re-labels specimens. Utilizes standard precautions when collecting and handling specimens. Ensures proper hand hygiene and use of proper isolation protection when indicated.
Works in the assigned location but responds to department needs by changing roles to meet workload demands in different areas. Ensures that collection requests for assigned shift are completed by monitoring Rover devices, expected lists, or patient wait areas. Trains new employees, students and/or other healthcare team members.
Qualifications
Required
High School diploma or equivalent.
Completion of a certified Phlebotomy course (Must be a Certified Phlebotomist)
BLS Certification (Basic Life Support)
Preferred
Previous hospital experience.
