Job Description:

SUMMARY

This is entry level, manual labor in the installation of meters and endpoints for electric, water and gas services. A successful candidate must be willing and able to work in a fast paced environment, have a valid driver’s license and put forth their best effort everyday.

Positions allocated to this classification report to a designated leader and work under limited supervision. Work in this class is distinguished from other classes by its emphasis on utility meter installation for the AMI Project.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Perform electric meter change-outs and all associated work orders assigned.

Commitment to customer service and responding to the needs of both internal and external customers professionally.

Completes all work in an organized, timely manner, within the instructed standard operating procedure.

Accurately collect customer data and detail the installations in writing and with mobile software and handheld devices.

Meet installation rate as established by the Project Manager.

Replace and Install electric meters, gas meters, and water meters.

Installs water modules and gas modules on existing meters.

Routes daily work to maintain efficiency when installing meters.

Performs manual labor on water, electric and gas installs. Assists in the installation of meters and other equipment as needed.

Uses hand tool, pneumatic tools, and other manual equipment

Performs manual labor for work site clean up.

Erects traffic control devices and various safety apparatus on work.

Cleans, maintains, and stores tools on trucks and trailers.

Operates City vehicles in a safe manner; conducts routine pre-trip inspections to confirm the vehicle is in safe operational condition.

Follows established safety guidelines regarding dogs, access to meters, personal safety, and hazardous conditions.

Adheres to City and departmental policies and code of conduct.

Attends work on a continuous and regular basis.

NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Maintains work area and equipment in a safe and efficient condition.

May enter data onto work order.

May perform work from elevated heights utilizing scaffolding, ladder, aerial device or work below grade.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job function satisfactorily. Below are the required education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Depending on the area of assignment:

Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma and six (6) months experience performing manual farm, construction, pipefitting, or utility related work, or an equivalent combination of training and experience which provide the required knowledge, ability, and skills.

Previous working experience in the construction field (Electrical, Natural Gas Meters, Telecom, Solar, Cable Field Techs or HVAC) strongly preferred.

Previous experience installing or repairing electric, gas, and/or water meters strongly preferred.

CERTIFICATIONS OR LICENSES

Licenses

Valid Florida Driver’s License required at time of appointment and at all times while employed in this classification.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Ability to follow instructions.

Knowledge of tools and equipment used in maintenance, repair or construction work.

Work involves extended periods of walking, bending, and stooping.

Ability to interact well with customers and uphold GRU customer standards.

Skill in manual tasks.

Ability to use assigned tools and work within safety guidelines.

Work requires physical strength and agility sufficient to perform essential job functions.

Demonstrates proficiency in basic computer skills.

Ability to work effectively with co-workers.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must possess certain physical abilities and be able to withstand work related environmental conditions.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work requires physical strength and agility sufficient to safely perform all essential job functions including the ability to lift, push, and pull up to fifty pounds without assistance.

Work requires the use of personal protective equipment including hearing, eye, foot, and head protection.

Must have cognitive ability to recognize risks associated with physical surroundings, and determine appropriate risk abatement actions. Requires manual dexterity and eye/hand coordination sufficient to safely perform all essential job functions.

Ability to walk between 4 to 6 miles per day

Physical ability to lift and carry up to 20 lbs., ability to comfortably walk at a steady pace throughout the workday, and ability to utilize hand digging tools as needed

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work may require performance of tasks outdoors under varying climatic conditions.

May be required to work overtime with limited notice.

Work will require exposure to domestic animals and wildlife during the performance of job duties.
