Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) is seeking a Senior Director for the Public Affairs team to manage its executive visibility and internal communication efforts. In this highly visible role, you will spearhead the creation and execution of a comprehensive executive visibility strategy for PhRMA’s senior leadership. Your responsibilities will include managing the executive visibility team, engaging with internal and external stakeholders to position PhRMA executives as thought leaders in the healthcare industry, and facilitating internal communications among PhRMA leadership, staff, board members, and member company personnel.
The Senior Director will:
- Develop and execute a comprehensive executive visibility strategy for PhRMA leadership, including CEO and other high profile executives.
- Prep and staff senior executives for public events, investor meetings, interviews, etc. Develop briefing packets and talking points for PhRMA leadership.
- Develop op-eds, LTEs and social media content to help elevate the public profile of senior leadership.
- Lead internal communications.
- Coordinate with senior executives at member companies on executive communications.
- Draft and route notes to the board of directors and lead regular communications from the CEO to board members specific to their company’s announcements.
- Lead regular communications with staff including all-staff notes, meetings, and engagement.
- Lead PhRMA’s sponsored and editorial events strategy, including developing talking points and social content for PhRMA executives participating in public-facing events and for board members doing PhRMA-affiliated events.
- Manage the executive visibility team, providing guidance, support, and mentorship to ensure consistent messaging and successful execution. Manage a team of consultants who work on executive social media, events and op-eds.

Demonstrated consensus building, decision-making and interpersonal skills are essential. This is a highly visible, fast-paced position that is both internally and externally facing. Accordingly, the successful candidate should be adaptable, able to reprioritize and shift gears quickly, comfortable in a high-pressure environment and be politically savvy, diplomatic, responsive, and mature.
Professional Experience / Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree (Master’s degree in Communications or related field preferred).
- 8+ years of diverse communications experience including significant media relations engagement and daily pitching and responding to media; third-party stakeholder outreach and engagement; proven management of complex issues, projects, tasks, requests, and timelines; and time spent within corporate, government, public relations agency, trade association, and/or advocacy organization(s) or political campaigns.
- A results-oriented team player - business, political and/or trade association experience preferred with a keen understanding of organizational operations/dynamics.
- Ability to inspire confidence within the organization and with external constituencies.
- Ability to balance the needs of various internal and external parties with flexibility and a steady temperament.
- Must be willing to travel frequently and be responsive/available after hours and on weekends.
Potential Salary
$141,100-187,625 per annum. Salary is commensurate with experience and other compensable factors.
