Job Summary

The Department of Pathology seeks a full-time technician to participate in translational studies of respiratory infectious diseases, asthma, and other pulmonary diseases. The applicant will become an integral member of the Dr. Fonseca research group studying lung immunopathology. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to perform experiments using various state-of-the-art techniques involving cell biology, molecular biology, and in vivo animal models. This position also provides the opportunity to learn cutting-edge primary cell culture techniques required for cultivating human and murine lung epithelial cells. The selected candidate will help with the management of mouse colonies, facilitate primary cell culture, and assist with executing experiments under the supervision of the laboratory manager and principal investigators.

Responsibilities*

  • Perform mRNA extraction, cDNA conversion, and qRTPCR.
  • Maintain primary cell cultures and cell lines for experiments.
  • Process murine samples, including tissue dissociation and cell culture.
  • Cryosection frozen tissues and perform immunohistochemistry experiments.
  • Conduct in vivo rodent fibrosis and inflammation experiments.
  • Analyze protein expression and cell signaling by western blotting.
  • Collaborate scientifically with colleagues, including training new lab members and supervising/mentoring undergraduate students.
  • Contribute to general lab upkeep.

Required Qualifications*

  • HS Diploma or associate degree
  • 1 year experience to qualify for the Associate level and 1-2 years experience to qualify for the Intermediate level
  • Strong writing and communication skills
  • Proficiency in Prism and MS Office
  • Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third-party administrator to conduct background screenings

Desired Qualifications*

  • A bachelor's degree in biological science or health sciences and at least one year of laboratory research experience are required.
  • Research lab experience in cell culture and molecular biology are required. Proficiently in routine laboratory techniques is needed.
  • Additional lab experience in areas of molecular genetics (genotyping of mouse colonies) or biochemistry is preferred.
  • A strong motivation to advance research and laboratory techniques, along with the ability to solve problems and develop new research directions, is desired. Preference will be given to applicants who take initiative and work well with other research team members.
  • Proficiency in English, strong work ethic, computer (word processing, PowerPoint, and spreadsheet software), and communication skills are required.

Background Screening

Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
