Job Summary

The research laboratory of Dr. Anthony Rosenzweig in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI is in search of a Research Laboratory Specialist to serve as the Rosenzweig Research Laboratory Lead. The laboratory is situated in the heart of Michigan Medicine at the North Campus Research Complex in a newly renovated laboratory building within steps of a multitude of research resources, easy access to collaborators, and animal facilities. The laboratory research focuses on cardiac physiology and disease, interested in understanding how exercise protects the heart against heart failure.

Responsibilities*

Supervises laboratory activities:

  • Directs and supervises training and ongoing activities of new employees in laboratory procedures and protocols.  This includes technicians, students, and post-doctoral fellows.
  • Ensure all new employees have proper computer equipment, access, training and complete all new employee orientation checklist items
  • Provides oversight to ensure all activities follow relevant regulations and best practices.
  • Assist with biochemical, molecular and/or in-vivo work as needed
  • Contributes ideas and suggestions for improvements in experimental design and protocols where applicable.  Creates new protocols and documents as needed
  • Creates, maintains, distributes and updates various lab databases as well as lab jobs, lab meeting presenters and emergency contact lists.
  • Engaged with PI in allocating space, laboratory equipment, orienting and supervising standard operating procedures and in assigning lab operational responsibilities among those working in the laboratory.
  • Attend and report as needed on lab manager and research safety meetings.
  • Defines procedures for retention, protection, retrieval, transfer, and disposal of written and electronic research materials created by past and current employees.

Management of grant spending

  • Must have a general understanding of NIH and other sponsored funding agency cost principles
  • Oversees laboratory spending, track and maintain budget and spend against each grant. Proper use of short codes, chart fields and appropriate spending
  • Works with the pre and post-award Research Administrator to monitor and assure appropriate allocation of lab spending in accordance with project and lab budgets and applicable regulation

Animal Protocol and Support: 

  • Animal protocol management- new protocols, updating old and ensuring all lab members are training and in compliance
  • Monitors use of animals follows IACUC and AAALAC requirements and reports infractions to Senior Investigator. 
  • Instructs new employees in various animal techniques. 
  • Coordinates user work schedules for equipment, procedure rooms and animal hood use. 
    • Responsible for ordering, tracking and monitoring all animal purchases
    • Maintaining accurate cage count census and working with the PI to ensure cage count stays within approved range.

Equipment Management:

  • Purchase new equipment, prepare sole source justification and budget rational and arrange repairs when needed. Maintains equipment records, maintenance, and service contracts for lab equipment. 
  • Maintain equipment records, maintenance, and service contracts for capital equipment in the laboratory
  • Responsible for ensuring all capital equipment have proper asset tags, are in the correct location and contacts asset management in the event of any relocations, or removal of equipment

Professional development

  • Attends lab meetings, local research seminars keep abreast of technological advances, new equipment and consumables
  • When appropriate, may attend scientific conferences to present results of research projects and maintain scientific development

Safety Oversight:

  • Serve as the Laboratory Safety Officer for the laboratory. Monitors all laboratory personnel for adherence to federal, state and UM safety standards. 

Required Qualifications*

This position is posted with an underfill. Individual requirements for each level are as follows:

  • Senior: Bachelor's degree required and 5+ years of experience. Master's degree preferred
  • Lead: Master's degree and 6+ years of experience.

For all levels:

  • Relevant laboratory experience in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, and/or Cell Biology  
  • Familiarity with Murine genetic models necessary.
  • Laboratory Supervisory experience and experience training new research hires in laboratory techniques, new techniques, and research methodologies
  • Excellent oral and written skills
  • Excellent understanding and abilities in advance molecular and cell biological techniques
  • Ability to work in both team-effort situations and independently.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of colleagues with sensitivity to different cultural perspectives
  • Ability to organize work schedules for self and others
  • Demonstrated organizational skills
  • Excellent personal computer and database skills

Desired Qualifications*

  • Ph.D. or other advanced degree in Biological Sciences
  • Familiarity with cardiovascular research
  • Familiarity with biochemical, molecular and/or in-vivo work strongly desired with an interest in running and/or assisting with procedures, experiments and other laboratory activities.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
