Job Summary

Saint-Gobain employs over 300 researchers at its North American Research Center located in Northboro, MA, across multiple businesses. Specifically for Ceramic Materials, over 40 researchers in 5 teams conduct research and development on refractory materials and designed grains and powders that serve numerous industries, as well as exciting new products for decarbonization and energy-efficient solutions. Saint-Gobain Ceramic Materials is looking for a researcher with experience in ceramics processing and experience/interest in thermomechanical and/or transport modeling to join Ceramics R&D.

This Research Engineer II is expected to deliver independent results on assigned projects while successfully integrating in a matrix organization. As such, the candidate must have demonstrated experience in conventional ceramics processing. Projects may include formulation, mixing/forming/firing process, and test method development, as well as implementation support at manufacturing facilities. Experience in some aspects of statistical methods, data analysis, and coding/modeling is also required. Some projects may include finite element modeling, whereby manufacturing processes used to make products or the surface conditions to which products will be exposed are simulated.

The selected candidate will be expected to lead R&D projects through effective collaboration with R&D colleagues, commercial team members, external customers, and external suppliers. The candidate will create and execute project plans, design, and conduct experiments, analyze data, and present findings in written and oral formats.

The main job duties will include:

  • Contribute to multiple projects from inception through scale-up, with minimum supervision. Participate in multiple projects simultaneously, on time, well documented and within budget.
  • Provide oral and written communication of goals, timings, and results.
  • Demonstrate collaborative approach in all areas of responsibility, seeking others to enhance and streamline development and decision making.
  • Use research and/or project experiences to improve on/or develop products and processes.
  • Apply stage-gate approach to project decisions.
  • Utilize technical background and experience to develop and/or improve products, processes, and performance and/or reduce costs within a major product area.
  • Partner externally/internally to advance projects and develop competencies.
  • Summarize projects' approach and results in concise and accurate technical memos, reports, and presentations.
  • Demonstrate open and collaborative approach in all areas of responsibility and seek out others to enhance and streamline development and decision making.
  • Champion health, safety and environmental initiatives and consciousness in the organization.
  • Integrate into a dynamic R&D center, staying aware of innovative technologies, methods, and solutions relevant to Saint-Gobain's product, process, and material needs.


Required Qualifications

  • BS degree with a minimum of 3+ years of industry or research experience, or entry level master's or PhD in Ceramic Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials, or similar Engineering/Science disciplines.
  • Industrial, laboratory, or academic research; or manufacturing experience.
