Job Overview
The Regional Safety Services Specialist is responsible for assisting in the hands-on delivery and evaluation of consistent driver training and overall company loss prevention programs designed to eliminate collisions and injuries and maintain legal compliance. This position provides technical expertise on regulatory issues, training, and evaluating employees to improve safety performance. The Regional Safety Services Specialis provides guidance to the facilities regarding training and prevention activities and tracks terminal performance regarding the same. Assists in the initial and ongoing selection, training, and evaluation of drivers, driver trainers, and instructors. This position also assists in the collection, review, and analysis of safety information and data used in loss trending; assists in the development of skills and compliance-related programs to develop drivers, non-drivers, and operations leadership in collision avoidance and regulatory compliance. Assists the safety services team in all aspects of DOT compliance.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Participates in collision reviews and conducts the first report of losses and skills assessments with drivers to identify opportunities for improvement and loss trending
- Assists in data collection and analysis for loss trending, training content, safety process improvement, training content revision, facility meetings, and leadership development content and to improve driver performance
- Determines and develops the most appropriate content for Facility driver meetings and leadership development based on their specific needs and assist in conducting the meetings, as needed
- Conducts quarterly, structured Safety Metrics Performance Reviews with each assigned facility and assists in developing a targeted action plan to create measurable improvement, while providing measurement and feedback on their improvement efforts, results to operations leadership
- Coordinates with operations to ensure all length of service and PIT training is conducted as required using correct content and reviewing the skills check ride evaluation for quality
- Assists in the selection of certified driver trainers by ensuring they meet the qualifications, conducting structured interviews, and participating in the selection consensus
- Evaluates driver orientation’s effectiveness on an ongoing basis through weekly reviews of orientation surveys, initial road tests, and test summaries
- Serves as a technical resource for operations in areas of DOT compliance, PeopleNet, Bendix Wingman Fusion, safety processes, and driver training and skills performance and completes evaluations to determine which drivers are performing up to standard and depending on the level of risk identified, recommend to operations the appropriate disciplinary actions, Step, recommend to HR and operations to terminate, or disqualify the associate as a driver through safety services
- Assists the safety services team as needed to ensure compliance with all company, client, and department of transportation (DOT) policies, and procedures, as well as assist in performing the work of others as needed. Observes a day of instruction every 6-8 weeks or more frequently if needed and provides instructor training and occasionally conduct orientation as needed. Performs other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Ability to lift 50 lbs, pull 100 lbs, stand and walk combined for 7 hours per day, squat, kneel, climb in and around tractors and trailers on occasion
- Must be organized, able to multi-task, and have strong attention to detail
- Possess strong verbal, analytical, listening, and written communication skills
- Functionally competent computer skills related to Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, with TMW knowledge
- Ability to work with little or no supervision
- Previous supervisory, management experience preferred
Minimum Qualifications
- 2 years of education beyond high school in college or technical school
- Knowledge acquired through 5 to up to 7 years of work experience
- 5+ years transportation and DOT safety, training experience
- Certification Requirements (Driver’s License, Professional Certification, etc.): Class A CDL
