Full Job Description

SUMMARY: The Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs (Provost/VPAA) is the chief academic officer of the college. As an equity minded scholar and academic leader, the successful candidate will guide all aspects of academic affairs. Working with department chairs to support the professional growth of the faculty, they will ensure academic and pedagogical excellence to support the success and degree attainment of Northerns diverse student population. The Provost/VPAA is on the executive leadership team and reports to the president.
About Northern
As a Hispanic- and Indigenous-serving institution, Northern has served the rural communities of Northern New Mexico for generations. Since opening in 1909 as the Spanish American Normal School in El Rito, NM, the College has provided affordable, open access to quality academic programs to meet educational, economic and cultural needs of the region.
Now one of the states four regional comprehensive institutions, with its main campus in Espaola, Northern offers more than 50 bachelors, associate, and certificate programs in arts, film & human sciences, STEM, business, education, liberal arts, and nursing. Northern has reintroduced technical trades in partnership with two local unions and five public school districts through its new co-located branch community college, the first of its kind in the states history. Northern is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and has earned prestigious program specific accreditations for its engineering, nursing, education, and business programs.
Situated in the Espaola Valley of northern New Mexico, there is easy access to many mountain ranges, lakes and wilderness areas. The area is convenient to many outdoor activities such as skiing, hiking, biking, and river sports like rafting and kayaking. Espaola is 30 minutes from Santa Fe, 20 minutes from Los Alamos, and 45 minutes to Taos. It is truly New Mexico.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides leadership in all areas related to curriculum development, revision, redesign and implementation and in the most current use of educational technology.
  • Provides coordination for program articulation between regional K-12 and other post- secondary institutes and programs.
  • Budget preparation, development, and monitoring functions. This includes budget-related activities such as retreats, revisions, and participation in the cost study and implementation of the funding formula.
  • Responsible for internal and external reporting of student enrollment data.
  • Responsible for maintaining competency and up-to-date knowledge of college rules and bylaws, Board of Regents policies and procedures, HLC, State, and Federal standards and regulations pertaining to higher education; responsible for ensuring the academic and enrollment enterprise maintains compliance with governing board, accreditation, and Federal regulations.
  • Leads the development, management, and evaluation of direct reports.Work collaboratively with senior administrators, department chairs, faculty, staff, and external constituents to achieve institutional goals; and to act decisively under stressful situations.
  • Foster a collaborative and spirited work environment.
  • Lead college efforts to recruit, retain, and graduate students in collaboration with faculty, staff, and the executive team.
  • Establish funding priorities aligned with institutional goals, identify funding sources and mechanisms in collaboration with academic departments, and work with finance and grant managing teams to ensure compliance with funding agency policies and requirements.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Doctorate /Terminal Degree in any field from an accredited institution.
  • Five years of progressive experience in positions of increasing responsibility and leadership in highereducation of related experience at the college or university level.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and working with a multicultural/multilingual student and their communities.
  • Demonstrated experience with national accreditation standards, practices, and compliance.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATION:

  • Seven years of progressive experience in positions of increasing responsibility and leadership in highereducation of related experience at the college or university level.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Knowledge of the goals, objectives, structure, operations, and reporting on a major public college or university.
  • Skill in organizing resources, strategic planning, and establishing priorities.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergent situations.
  • Experience in budget preparation and fiscal management including the ability to analyze budgetary expenditures for compliance with approved budget.
  • Teaching experience in higher education.
