Basic Function:
Responsible for various project Engineering, Project Management, and problem-solving activities associated with transmission or large distribution multi-faceted projects including, engineering, construction and feasibility studies to support strategic objectives.
This position may be filled at Senior Engineer (Level 6) or Principal Engineer (Level 7) based on the work experience, education, and certifications of the successful candidate.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Functional Expertise:
- Performs engineering assignments involved in the design and construction of natural gas transmission/large distribution pipelines, and metering & regulating stations,
- Provides technical support, guidance, and oversight for the design, selection and installation of pipeline and M&R Stations.
- Directs, evaluates and reviews the documentation of technical specifications and requirements.
- Performs review of engineered drawings to ensure compliance with DOT Safety regulations and with corporate standards and specifications
- Develops and approves material and equipment specifications.
- Develop statement of work documents to secure and manage engineering service providers, inspectors, and other technical resources that may be needed to develop the project. Approves material specifications
- Provides permanent solutions for repairing existing transmission facilities.
- Manages outside engineering services to ensure project goals are met on complex or high-cost jobs
- Responsible for delivering Engineering As-Built drawings and ensuring proper close out packages are submitted to Company’s repository system.
- Develops detailed project estimates and monitors the costs at different stages to ensure the project stays within the estimated costs/budget
- Demonstrates proficiency in applying codes and standards to perform natural gas engineering, construction and operation
- Serves as project manager; assists in determining project objectives on the development of a comprehensive project design, outlines project requirements, assigns tasks, coordinates project activities with other operating units to facilitate participation of appropriate staff on project, supervises progress to ensure objectives are met.
- Maintains working knowledge of relevant technologies and best practices. Ensure engineering standards, methods and practices are in regulatory compliance.
- Develops design options or recommendations to improve system optimization. Assesses feasibility of engineering solutions.
- Researches and evaluates operational performance, safety regulation compliance and cost impact of equipment and material utilization for gas systems.
- Conducts research to complete studies and formulating proposals and recommendations
- Participates in procurement process to identify acceptable vendors and contractors. Evaluate bids and coordinate with other departments to ensure consistence with corporate standards
- Stays abreast of industry engineering and construction trends, implementing best practices into plans
- Participates in design and process safety reviews of existing and grass roots facilities
- Oversees or supports construction activities
- Develops engineering standards, methods and guidelines.
- Trains and mentors less senior engineers. Provides technical direction to project team members.
Business Acumen:
- Reviews engineering designs to provide for the most cost-effective long-term solution for project.
- Apply knowledge of pipeline design, meters, regulators and relief valves and procedures for sizing.
- Proficient at applying codes and standards as they apply to natural gas engineering. Codes include DOT 192, and Operations Procedure Manual.
Engagement:
- Collaborates with construction management, operations managers and technical services to produce effective designs.
- Manages staff performance and development for IPO’s and Success Factors.
- Anticipates and identifies issues that put projects at risk. Implements corrective action.
Driving Results:
- Identifies and resolves obstacles/issues that put project at risk; Provides technical guidance for less senior staff.
- Tracks projects from concept through construction. Responsible for accounting for budget variances and reporting monthly metrics for the Division to Engineering Manager.
Education, Experience, Certifications/Licenses: Level 6
Required:
- BS in recognized engineering specialty, ABET accredited institution
- 7+ years of gas engineering or operations experience
- Engineering background with knowledge of gas engineering principles and theories, operation of gas distribution systems, and financial and statistical analysis
- Knowledge of DOT pipeline safety regulations
Or
- Equivalent academic education and experience
Preferred:
- Professional Engineering (PE) License
- Certified Project Manager

- 10+ years of gas engineering or operations experience
- Engineering background with knowledge of gas engineering principles and theories, operation of gas distribution systems, and financial and statistical analysis
- Knowledge of DOT pipeline safety regulations
Or
- Equivalent academic education and experience
Preferred:
- Professional Engineering (PE) License
- Certified Project Manager.
