Job Description:

Boston Conservatory at Berklee invites applications for a part-time open rank faculty position in Musicology in the department of Composition, Contemporary Music, and Core Studies. The ideal candidate for this position will be a motivated, creative professional who is committed to excellence in teaching and mentorship, has a robust record of course design, and who enjoys working in a campus climate that promotes cultural diversity and multicultural understanding. This is a part-time faculty position with a renewable contract; initial appointment to begin September 1, 2025. Compensation and rank are commensurate with professional experience.

Core Studies at Boston Conservatory:

Core Studies includes Music History and Music Theory, and includes all courses in the Ear Training, Harmony & Counterpoint, Time & Rhythm, and Narratives of Music History sequences for undergraduates, as well as graduate seminars, advanced Theory/Musicology electives, and review courses for MM students. The Core Studies area reaches all degree-seeking students in the Music Division.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

Primary duties in the Music History area include teaching any of the core undergraduate requirements within the Narratives of Music History sequence, graduate review courses, electives, required graduate courses, and graduate seminars. Other duties and responsibilities will be based on needs of the department, and the candidate’s individual experience along with areas of the candidate’s specialization. The ideal candidate will have particular experience teaching music of the Medieval and Renaissance periods; additionally, experience teaching music of 1900-1945 is preferred.

Required Skills:

  • Experience teaching undergraduate and graduate students in classroom contexts

  • Experience teaching in a seminar- or lecture-style classroom

  • High level of familiarity with diverse contemporary repertoire, composers, and performers

  • Commitment to supporting a diverse student body, with demonstrated experience fostering inclusion and belonging in teaching, recruitment, and curricular design

  • Preferred: experience teaching music of the Medieval and Renaissance periods; experience teaching early-mid 20th century; experience with teaching Research Methods, Bibliography, and Writing courses

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Musicology, Ph.D. preferred

  • Minimum 4 years teaching in accredited higher education institution as instructor of record

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

  • Willingness to work within a diverse faculty and student body
