Duke University Hospital, inpatient Hematologic Malignancy and Cellular Therapy (HMCT) Service

Job Summary

The HMCT Advanced Practice Provider provides direct patient care on the inpatient HMCT unit and works in collaboration with attending physicians and other medical professionals by collecting and documenting data, obtaining/ordering diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, laboratory studies and professional consultations. The age-specific scope of practice is between 18 and older.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Promote and maintain high standards of patient care throughout the continuum of cancer diagnosis.
  • Elicit detailed and accurate patient histories and perform through physical examinations.
  • Order appropriate diagnostic imaging and tests to determine medical and post treatment diagnoses, patient conditions, treatment toxicities.
  • Formulate appropriate treatment plans with critical thinking skills and high-level clinical judgement including prescribing appropriate medications.
  • Chart patient progress maintaining detailed and accurate health records
  • Participate in clinical research projects and understand the importance of documentation of toxicities and data collection.
  • Communication among multi-disciplinary teams to support patient care.
  • Collaborating, supporting and building strong relationships with supervising, back-up supervising physicians, APP colleagues, and team members.
  • Participate in education of patients, family members, new staff, students and other learners.
  • See scheduled and unscheduled patients.
  • Attend program required meetings.
  • Maintain up to date clinical and professional knowledge via approved CME.
  • Protect patient confidentiality, maintain ethics and abide by North Carolina laws and Duke Health System policies.
  • Maintain institutional requirements for compliance.

Job Eligibility Requirements

Education

NP: Graduate of MSN or DNP accredited Nurse Practitioner Program for adult care

PA: Graduate of ARC accredited Master's Degree or Doctoral Degree Physician Assistant Program

Certification

NP: Any NP certification that treats adults (FNP, ANP, AGNP, AGACNP, etc.)

PA: PA-C

Licensure

NP: Unrestricted RN licensure issued by or recognized by the NCBON with authorization to practice as a NP

PA: Unrestricted medical license issued by NCMB with authorization to practice as PA

Both: Federal and State DEA independent license with prescriptive authority

Experience

APP experience is preferred, ideally Oncology related, but recent or new APP grads graduating by December 2024 are welcome to apply.

  • Analytical thinking skills with curiosity and ability to investigate and diagnose.

  • Excellent communication skills and customer service skills
  • Experience working independently and as a part of a team
  • The desire and willingness to continue to learn

Job Hours

Monday through Sunday including weekends and holidays, 12- hour day shift, 7A-7P. 13 shifts per 28 days.
