Mitsubishi Electric Trane HVAC US LLC is looking for a Mechanical Engineer ll in Chicago, IL or Cincinnati, OH.
POSITION SUMMARY:
This role is responsible for providing design and application support, along with application training, on Commercial and Residential ductless and Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) HVAC systems. This person will deploy their industry knowledge to obtain criteria to develop plans to solve complex engineering challenges. Through the review of design constraints, this person will assess the feasibility and soundness of proposed engineering solutions alongside the Associate Mechanical Engineer, HVAC Products within the Business Unit. This person will create and implement plans to transfer engineering knowledge to internal and external customers, including the Associate Mechanical Engineer, HVAC Products, METUS sales personnel, and the specification community.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The essential functions of the position include, but are not limited to the following:
Application Support:
- Provide technical and application support through the development and implementation of software tools, programs, and information to create strategic advantage, solve market needs, and leverage core capability to increase the knowledge and specification of Mitsubishi Electric Trane HVAC US (METUS) solutions.
- Lead the development of engineering application white papers and more complex collateral to address specific business unit concerns. Considered the subject matter expert on the design and application of METUS HVAC systems.
- Applies fundamental engineering concepts to more complex application problems and projects in partnership with the Mechanical Engineer, HVAC Products. Examples of fundamental engineering concepts include, but are not limited to, load and energy analysis, psychometrics, pipe and duct sizing, pump and fan curves, and basic electrical knowledge including three-phase power concepts.
- Knowledge and familiarity with codes and standards related to Commercial HVAC system, such as ASHRAE 15, ASHRAE 55, ASHRAE 62.1, ASHRAE 90.1, IECC and other ICC national and state specific mechanical codes.
- Seeks opportunities to become involved in project installation sites, working alongside METUS service and sales staff to build knowledge and skills on the proper application and installation of METUS products.
Training:
- Provide input into the creation and implementation of applications-based training for field sales, HVAC specifiers and design professionals, building owners and developers, and distributors. Training includes knowledge transfer of existing products/applications and introduction of new products/applications.
- Collaborate with METUS sales personnel to identify custom training requirements, such as lunch and learns, customer-specific training and develop associated engineering and product specific materials.
Technical Documentation and Collateral:
- Create and review technical documentation, literature, and collateral. Technical documentation includes, but is not limited to, application notes, I&O manuals, schematic drawings, submittals, engineering data, and white papers.
- In concert with internal stakeholders, seek out and identify deficiencies in technical documentation and develop plans to create and implement revisions as needed.
Customer Support:
- Provide Tier 2 level customer support for distributors, owners, design professionals, and contractors for application and technical support.
- Performs system evaluation and performance data using maintenance tool software in conjunction with the METUS service and technical support teams.
Product Development:
- Provides input to Product Management teams for new product ideation and analysis.
- Assist in the review of product launch collateral, to provide engineering insight, with the METUS Product Management team.
- Willing to travel up to 20% to for various Company meetings and training both domestically and possibly internationally
- Perform other Duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- B.S degree in mechanical engineering or similar technical degree from ABET accredited engineering program.
- Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering, or similar discipline, preferred.
- 3-7 years mechanical HVAC experience, preferably from a consulting engineering background, including design and energy analysis.
- Prefer licenses to include: E.I.T. (engineer in training), P.E. license, LEED A.P. and CEM accreditation.
- Experience with Trane Trace 3D Plus, Carrier HAP, EnergyPro, and EQuest.
- Experience with AutoCAD (required) and REVIT (preferred).
- Excellent computer skills with Microsoft Office and networking, specifically with a strong knowledge of Excel functionality with the ability to create complex Excel files for analysis.
- Strong communication, presentation, training, and technical writing skills; Analytical approach to problem solving; self motivated, and like to work hands-on.
- Prior people management experience preferred.
- Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record

The base pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $80,000 and $110,000 per year, however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including target bonus plans and discretionary awards. Subject to the terms and conditions of the applicable plans then in effect, eligible employees may enroll in a 401(k) plan, as well as participate in Company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and basic life insurance plans for the employee and the employee's eligible dependents. Employees will also receive 80 hours of vacation per year, 56 hours of paid sick leave annually, and 13 paid holidays throughout the calendar year, depending on hire date. Employees may also take up to 12 weeks of paid or unpaid [parental/disability/emergency/etc.] leave, if eligible.
