Independently, and within a team setting, perform various cardiac, pulmonary, and metabolicstresstestingin accordance withAmerican College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines. Appropriately assess patient's medical history,presenting symptoms, and functional capabilitiesto ensure patient safety and diagnosticreliabilityof test results as outlined with best practices at Duke Hospital.

Work Performed
Level I & Level II - Performs all Exercise Specialist duties and diagnostic testing independently as required by work site. - Assist with oversight and daily operations of clinical programs. - Assist manager with program compliance, benchmarking and performance improvement. -. Oversees the performance of exercise tolerance tests, echocardiogram stress tests, both non-invasive and invasive metabolic stress tests performed on a treadmill or cycle ergometer and pulmonary testing (performs these tests clinically and for research cases). -Required to have clinical knowledge of disease management and programming for multiple co-morbidities. - Mentor and lead others in the department (employees and interns) -Recognizes symptom changes/signs of problems and knows the appropriate medical response and processes. Initiates first responder care. - Active in program certification process and regulatory agency review according to work site. -Ability to utilize a multidisciplinary approach to lifestyle modification with comprehensive knowledge of disease processes, and the implication of multiple co-morbidities on exercise tolerance and response. Coordinates patient care with providers based off data obtained through medically supervised exercise sessions.
Essential Responsibilities:
*Oversees exercise tests conducted on a treadmill/cycle ergometer. Performs metabolic stress tests, pulmonary function tests and six-minute walk tests. Obtains medical history, examines patient, and determines the clinical utility of the study, pre-test, probability, indications and contraindications of the test.
*Utilizes chart/computerized medical record reporting system to obtain previous test results to maximize the safety of the exercise study. Identifies high-risk patients by history and examination to determine who may be at excessive risk for the procedure. Determines the appropriate nature of selected pharmacologic studies.
*Demonstrates sound clinical judgment when overseeing exercise. Observes the patient during exercise and monitors symptoms, electrocardiogram and hemodynamic responses to exercise stress and recovery, ensuring that a complete, informative and safe examination or exercise session is performed. Ensures that an accurate test report is prepared.
*Assists in the overall conduct of the laboratory, including assisting with scheduling, maintaining supplies and equipment, and instructing other laboratory staff, allied health professionals and students.
*Presents case reports to healthcare providers' team when appropriate. Interacts with a multidisciplinary team regarding data obtained from the test results. Attends appropriate rounds and conferences; provides in-services when requested and approved by the lab Supervisor.
-Oversees invasive exercise tests, including obtaining metabolic data at rest and/or during stress, which are performed on a cycle ergometer during right heart catherization.
-In addition to daily operation expectations, individuals will serve as the point person reporting to either the lab Supervisor, ordering equipment parts and ordering of medical and non-medical supplies.
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education
Master's degree in Exercise Physiology or Exercise Science. Bachelor's degree plus ACSM RCEP credential accepted
Experience
Level I: Minimum 1 yrs applicable experience, prefer 2
Level II: Minimum 3 yrs applicable experience (leadership experience preferred).
Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification:
Level I: ACLS required (must obtain within 6 months of hire date); ACSM certification as Exercise Physiologist, Health Fitness instructor, Group Exercise Instructor, or Personal Trainer (must obtain within 6 months of hire date).
Level II: ACLS required; ACSM certification as Clinical Exercise Physiologist required.
