National Grid is hiring aEngineering Manager, Electrical Planning and Design for Massachusetts. This is a Hybrid Role - Must live within a commutable distance to one of our locations.
Job Purpose
This role leads National Grid's operational telecom network infrastructure's strategic planning, development, and management. The manager will coordinate, plan, and oversee telecom projects and initiatives, ensuring alignment with National Grid's overall business strategy. This includes managing the lifecycle of telecom assets, developing telecom agreements, developing telecom policy, guidelines, and standards, ensuring network resiliency and availability, and representing the company operational telecom needs within the organization and external stakeholders. The role involves a strategic focus on future-proofing the network, managing regulatory changes, and developing innovative infrastructure installation and restoration solutions.

Key Accountabilities
- Collaborate with key stakeholders in creating and developing National Grid's Operational Telecom Network build-out strategy and roadmap, aligning with organizational goals and future telecom needs.
- Coordinate and drive the implementation of the Operational Telecom Strategy, ensuring all telecom projects align with the overall roadmap and remain within established guidelines and standards.
- Work with Transmission Asset Management, Distribution Asset Management, Operations, and other stakeholders to develop network resiliency strategies, including fiber network restoration plans.
- Collaborate with Transmission & Distribution Standards and engineering teams to innovate cost-effective and time-efficient methods for installing fiber optic cables on transmission and distribution lines.
- Oversee the entire lifecycle of operational telecom assets, including fiber, microwave, fixed and land mobile
- radio, and leased services
- Manage telecom-related agreements with external partners (utilities, municipalities, service providers) to meet National Grid's strategic interests and cost efficiencies.
- Monitor changes in FAA, FCC, and telecom industry regulations, assess potential impacts, and communicate updates to stakeholders.
- Mitigate strategic risks, such as interference with licensed spectrum bands, by keeping abreast of regulatory developments and coordinating responses with stakeholders.
- Act as the primary operational telecom representative with IT and other stakeholders to align and refine the IT/OT Strategy for National Grid.
- Collaborate with internal and external partners to capture and analyze evolving telecom requirements and technological advancements.
- Provide telecom-related inputs for National Grid's short-term, mid-term, and long-term capital investment plans.
- Provide telecom-related inputs and support rate case or modernization proceedings.
- Provide telecom support for regulatory or compliance audits.
- Educate internal stakeholders on telecom network needs, options, and innovations, fostering an understanding of telecom's role within the larger grid operations.
- Make authoritative technical engineering recommendations to support team members and provide innovative solutions which have a positive impact on business performance in the short and longer term.
- Promote the philosophy of safe working to team employees.
- Develop and implement plans to develop engineering in a geographically diverse professional team to ensure effective use of resources and effective solutions for internal customers.
- Apply process improvement techniques and practices to promote continuous improvement and foster excellence in project engineering.
- Support Operations during storm emergencies as required. Train self and staff to be prepared to execute storm roles assigned.
Qualifications
- A Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or Technology from an ABET accredited engineering school with knowledge of the operational telecom aspects or electric power systems.
- Minimum of 5 years in an engineering field closely related to operational telecom/electric power system engineering. Telecom operations and/or maintenance experience would be an added benefit.
- Professional Engineering License preferred.
- Strong background in telecom network planning, asset management, and operational management.
- Extensive experience managing lifecycle assets in telecom infrastructure (fiber, microwave, land mobile radio, fixed private radio, and leased services).
- Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and work collaboratively with IT, T&D Asset Management and Planning, Telecom Engineering, and Telecom Operation, and regulatory bodies.
- Familiarity with FCC and FAA regulations as they pertain to telecom networks.
- Strategic and analytical mindset with the ability to develop and execute long-term infrastructure plans.
- Proficient MS Office computer skills (Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, etc.)
- Demonstrates the ability to build an informed, independent opinion of project scoping needs, problems and/or opportunities and manage the development appropriate solutions.
- Proven interpersonal and written communication and leadership skills.
- Extensive relevant experience can substitute with a very qualified candidate.

Salary - $169,000 - $199,000
This position has a career path which provides for advancement opportunities within and across bands as you develop and evolve in the position; gaining experience, expertise and acquiring and applying technical skills.
