Job Summary
The Stress Management Clinical Service Nurse is an integral member of the medical center's interdisciplinary team. The Clinical Service Nurse will function as a clinician and teacher for patients referred for Stress Management. S/he provides education and mind/body/spirit interventions to reduce symptoms and promote effective coping, optimal functioning and improved quality of life for patients and families challenged by hospitalization and/or illness. In addition, they actively participate in the professional development of nursing staff as a teacher, consultant and role model. They collaborate with colleagues to improve outcomes in the physical, psychosocial, emotional, spiritual, and educational domains of the medical center's patients and families. The Stress Management Clinician contributes to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, and in providing leadership to the organization
Job Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Expert
- Provide clinical expertise in the field of stress management to patients and families referred for stress management consultation.
- Utilize comprehensive assessment skills to plan priorities and to set realistic outcomes.
- Provides individual or group instruction to patients and families.
- Assists staff members in developing teaching plans to further meet the learning needs of patients and families in stress and/or pain management.
- Empower patients/families to more effectively cope with the challenges of hospitalization or illness through education and the use of mind-body-spirit interventions.
- Refer patients needing extended therapy, psychotherapy, or other interventions to appropriate resources such as psychiatry, psychology, social work, pastoral care, patient resource management, etc.
- Collaborate with healthcare team in the evaluation and cost effectiveness of patient care
- Role model competence in advanced nursing skills
- Communicates effectively to maintain positive working relationships
- Maintains all professional requirements for licensure and certification
Coaching / Educator
- Teach, coach, and support nursing staff in evidence-based clinical decision-making and professional development.
- Assess educational needs of patients/families concerning alterations in health, the disease process, plan of care, and post-discharge plans.
- Assesses educational needs of the referred patient, and families designs and implements appropriate educational interventions. (Disease specific).
- Assess educational needs of nursing staff caring for patients who have been referred for Stress Management services.
- Teach, coach, and support DUHS nursing staff and other health care providers through formal and informal education.
- Obtain or develop appropriate educational resources for patients/families; plan and implement appropriate educational interventions; evaluate effectiveness and outcomes of patient/family teaching.
- Educate nurses and other healthcare providers about the impact of stress and how to utilize stress management techniques.
- Role model and precept healthcare learners through contractual agreements
Collaboration
- Provide leadership in the assessment, development and implementation of policies and procedures related to stress management education.
- Participate in the development of evidence-based standards of care/practice guidelines/policies and procedures/care maps/protocols for stress management.
- Serve as a resource and clinical expert consultant to nursing staff, medical staff, other healthcare providers, healthcare learners, patients/families and to the larger community.
- Participate in/support accreditation and regulatory activities of the organization.
- Provide leadership for establishing, improving, and sustaining collaborative relationships to meet clinical needs.
- Practice collegially with medical staff and other members of the healthcare team so that all providers' unique contributions to health outcomes will be enhanced.
- Role model professional nursing through conduct, appearance, communication, mutual respect, leadership, ethical decision-making, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
Professional Leadership and Development
- Facilitate the provision of clinically competent care by staff/team through education, role modeling, teambuilding, and quality monitoring.

- Uses effective strategies for changing clinician and team behavior to encourage adoption of evidence-based practices and innovations in care delivery.

- Demonstrate responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organization(s) and obtain a minimum of required Board of Nursing continuing education hours/year.
Research Utilization and Investigation and Quality Improvement
- Integrate evidence in the management of patients, families and groups
- Collaborate in quality improvement initiatives
- Assist with clinical research when appropriate
Job Eligibility Requirements
Education
- Graduate of an accredited BSN program
License
- Current unrestricted RN license issued by or recognized by the NCBON
Certification
- Health Coaching or Holistic RN certification preferred
Experience
- Minimum 1-year applicable RN clinical experience is required
OR equivalent combination of relevant education and/ or experience
Physical and mental requirements:
- Knowledge of professional nursing theory and clinical practice standards.
- Able to communicate clearly with patients, families, visitors, healthcare team, physicians, administrators, leadership, and others.
- Able to use sensory and cognitive functions to process and prioritize information, perform health assessments, treatment, and follow-up.
- Able to use fine motor skills
- Able to record activities, document assessments & interventions; prepare reports and presentations
- Able to use computer and learn new software programs
- Able to provide leadership in clinical area of expertise and in meeting organizational goals
- Able to navigate the Hospital and DUHS to provide clinical expertise to specific patient populations
- Able to withstand prolonged standing and walking with the ability to move or lift at least fifty pounds
- Able to remain focused and organized

1.0 FTE position, Monday-Friday, 10-hour day shift
