Full Job Description

The American Hospital Association (AHA) is a national organization that represents and serves all types of hospitals, health care networks, and their patients and communities. The AHA has two main offices, located in Washington, D.C. and Chicago. We are currently seeking a Chief Executive Officer, AONL and SVP, Chief Nurse Executive, AHA for our Chicago office.  

This role has responsibilities as the Chief Executive Officer of the American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL), and the Senior Vice President, Chief Nurse Executive for the American Hospital Association (AHA). As a visible and active national leader interacting with clinical, policy, association, and hospital and health care system leaders across health care, this individual is responsible for advancing the work of AONL and the AONL Foundation for Nursing Leadership, Research and Education. In a collaborative dyad model with the AHA Chief Physician Executive, the individual also provides critical clinical expertise to the AHA and supports key strategic workforce initiatives. The individual serves as a member of the AHA executive management group and leads the work to support nursing issues for the association.

  1. Represents and leads nursing issues for the AHA, serving as the executive leader for nursing within the association.
  2. Fulfills a variety of fiduciary, strategic, organizational development, leadership and governance responsibilities associated with AONL and the AHA. In collaboration with the AONL Board of Directors, responsible for the development of the AONL strategic plan and priorities to effectively serve the AONL membership. Also accountable for the execution of the AONL strategic plan, and the programs and policies authorized by the Board.
  3. Provides strategic direction and executive leadership for the development of AONL programs and services. This includes the development of inclusive and innovative approaches to networking, education and collaboration efforts for members and identified strategic partners to support the professional development of nurse leaders to advance nursing practice and patient care.
  4. Maintains effective relationships with the AONL affiliates to support collaboration and synergies at the state level.
  5. Provides executive leadership to the AONL Foundation and supports the Foundation Board in its priority to provide resources that create opportunities to bridge science and practice to shape the future of nursing leadership.
  6. Responsible for managing, supporting and developing a high performing team that supports the work of AONL and the AONL Foundation.
  7. Supports the AHA workforce strategies to provide support, resources, research and tools to the field.
  8. Actively participates as a member of the AHA executive management group to support the AHA mission and vision, and the AHA culture and workforce.

Required: Registered Nurse

Work Experience
12 years: Must be a registered nurse with a graduate degree. Strong preference for candidate to have a doctorate degree. One degree, either baccalaureate or graduate degree, must be in nursing. Minimum of 12 years of experience in executive leadership. Experience in leading teams in planning, developing, implementing and evaluating educational and professional development activities for nurses. Strong experience in governance, financial management and operations
