Under the guidance of the Managing Director of Development, Senior Director of Development, and Senior Associate Director of Development, Cancer Programs & Departments, this position will participate in setting the strategic direction for various fundraising efforts in priority areas such as cancer research, education, patient and family support, and clinical care. The Assistant Director will manage and solicit a portfolio of major gift prospects with an interest in cancer and will collaborate with other gift officers in obtaining major gifts.

Responsibilities*
Strategic Planning
- Create and implement a comprehensive, multi-year fundraising plan to increase philanthropic support for coverage areas in coordination and collaboration with the Senior Associate Director.
- Gather data, assess prospects, and develop strategies designed to realize the current and lifetime giving potential of individual prospects.
- Aggressively identify, and formally qualify, new major and planned gift prospects by developing and executing long-range and short-range strategy, producing a continuous stream of donors capable of making significant gifts.
- Develop expertise in areas of opportunity that potentially increase support for cancer priorities across Michigan Medicine and the Rogel Cancer Center.
Donor & Prospect Management
- Personally maintain a portfolio of approximately 125-150 major and planned gift prospects, maintaining frequent contact with prospects, university leaders, and volunteers spending approximately 60%-75% of time on direct fundraising efforts.
- Conduct a minimum of 75 face to face visits with prospects and donors per year and participate in approximately 10-20 solicitations per year with gifts ranging from $100K - $500K or more.
- Provide volunteer/fundraising board staff support and lead both internal and external groups in the identification, qualification, and evaluation of major, principal, and planned gift prospects.
- Provide guidance for fundraising committees and related events and activities led by volunteers whose goal it is to support our efforts in cancer fundraising.
- Demonstrate compassion and confidentiality as necessary when working with patients, families, and health teams.
- Have a comprehensive understanding of Michigan Medicine Development priorities as well as an understanding of the major cancer initiatives across Michigan Medicine and the Rogel Cancer Center. Make a persuasive verbal and written case for supporting key programs and projects, effectively matching the interests of prospects to specific medical development and University needs.
- Ensure consistent and appropriate contact, facilitate, or make solicitations, and ensure effective stewardship.
Collaboration
- Work collaboratively with other development personnel and faculty/medical staff in identifying donor referral opportunities and supporting the overall Michigan Medicine campaign goals.
- Maintain strong lines of communication with colleagues in other Michigan Medicine Development units, the Office of University Development, and appropriate schools and colleges across the University to ensure effective collaboration and synergy in achieving fundraising goals and objectives.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with colleagues throughout the Medical Campus and University, by demonstrating leadership in the development community.
- Through collegial consultation and cooperation, demonstrate and be a model of collaboration in the development community, while representing Michigan Medicine Development values and its unique role at the University of Michigan.

- Participate in Medical Development events as appropriate.
- Perform other duties as required or assigned.
Required Qualifications*
- Bachelor's degree
- At least 3 years of experience in fundraising (especially in personal solicitation programs) or relevant work experience in sales or similar field
- Experience in higher education and/or healthcare environment
- Demonstrated success in raising capital, program support and endowment gifts
- Experience with five and six figure gifts or sales and marketing accounts
- At least 3 years of project management experience
- Must be available to travel as needed.
- Candidate will be required to have reliable internet service.
Work Locations
The onsite location for this position is located at 777 E. Eisenhower Parkway, Ann Arbor and provides free, on-site parking for staff.
This position is a hybrid position. The Michigan Medicine Office of Development supports an overall culture of flexibility with gift officers expected to be outside of their home offices meeting with donors, faculty, or colleagues a minimum of three days each week. While work arrangements are flexible, you must currently, or be willing to, reside within a daily commutable distance of the office. Flexible work agreements are reviewed annually and are subject to change dependent on business needs.

Background Screening
Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
