Summary

This position is located at an Oklahoma City Area Indian Health Service and/or Health Centers within the medical staff section. The purpose of this position is to provide direct and comprehensive primary, preventative, and therapeutic medical and nursing care across the patient life span, i.e. geriatric, adult, adolescent, pediatric and infant patients and their families.

Duties

  • Conducts a complete health and development history from the patient and/or family member and performs a physical examination using palpation, percussion, auscultation, observation skills, using appropriate diagnostic instruments.
  • Orders and/or performs screening and diagnostic tests and procedures (lab studies, x-rays, electrocardiograms, audiograms, pulmonary function test, etc.) Interprets test results and analyzes all collected data, discriminates between normal and abnormal findings to identify all stages of serious physical, emotional or mental problems, and prioritizes health care needs.
  • Assess, plans and is involved in meeting the health needs of community and group health needs of community and group health needs, taking into consideration socio-economic, epidemiological and cultural influences. Develops and conducts health education classes and/or specialty clinics such as immunization, well-baby, nutrition, pre-natal care, parenting, women's health, men's health, adolescent health or employee health.
  • Teaches and counsels patients and family on disease prevention and health maintenance techniques. Promotes responsible behavior and implements plans to further enhance patient/family understanding of medical problems.

Measles and Rubella immunization required for selectees born after 1957 and seasonal influenza immunization is required for all staff working in Indian Health Service health care facilities.

The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including any licensure requirements. If privileges are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service.

Work involves walking, sitting, standing, reaching and bending in the assessment and treatment of patients. Lifting may involve moving patients or equipment. Work involves driving to schools, visiting homes, schools and communities. Incumbent may be required to work more than 8 hours per day when on-call.

Basic Requirements

Education

A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the , , , or an accrediting body recognized by the at the time the degree was obtained.

Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.

Advanced Practice Nurse Positions: For Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) positions, applicants must possess a graduate or higher level degree in nursing from an accredited educational program in the area of expertise or specialty indicated by the position.

Areas of specialties for positions include, but are not limited to, Acute Care, Anesthesia, Community Health, Family, Geriatric, Home Health, Midwifery, Neonatal, Oncology, Pediatric, Psychiatric, Allergy and Immunology, Women's Health, Cardiovascular, Dermatology, Occupational Health, Orthopedic, Respiratory, or other specialties identified for the position.

Licensure

For all grade levels and positions, applicants must have passed the . In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Additional License Requirements for Advanced Practice Nurse Positions: Applicants for Advanced Practice Nurse positions must be licensed or registered by a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States in the clinical specialty required by the position.

Experience

The work experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. At the GS-9 and above grade level, many positions may require experience in a specialty area of nursing.

Basic Requirements for the GS-12 (or equivalent) Grade Level

In addition to the mandatory license and education described above under Basic Requirements applicants must have at least one or more full years of professional nursing experience that is equivalent to the next lower grade level.

In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below-

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks:
GS-12: Provide direct and comprehensive primary, preventive and therapeutic medical and nursing care for patients, as well as counseling and/or coordinating services and participating with other disciplines in reviewing the program. Taking case histories, conducting physical examinations, and ordering laboratory studies during clinic visits. May carry out special procedures such as giving injections or other medication, apply or change dressing, perform lumbar punctures, or suture minor laceration.
