Job Summary

Our office works with students throughout their program through academic advising and contributing to student success, retention, and timely completion of degree.  You will be focused on student success by providing academic resources for students, tutoring options and programming that is responsive to student needs. You will contribute to a culture that is welcoming, supportive and responsive to the diverse identities of our students while collaborating with colleagues to build community among our student body. Important skills for this role include being adaptable, attending to details, taking initiative and being collaborative across the team. You will report to the Assistant Director of Academic Advising and may focus efforts on one of the three majors within the School of Kinesiology (Applied Exercise Science, Movement Science or Sport Management).  You'll perform responsibilities including the below; review more detail in the full job description here.

Work may be outside of regular business hours and require evening/weekend time. Responsibilities*

  • Assist students as they define, plan and achieve their educational goals including advising a caseload of students on degree requirements
  • Advise students on strategies that promote academic and professional success and empower students to take self-responsibility
  • Be proficient, knowledgeable, and stay current on curricular changes in all three degree programs (Applied Exercise Science, Movement Science, Sport Management)
  • Assist students experiencing academic difficulties, including those with transitional and health issues, and provide referrals to campus resources such as financial aid, tutoring and study groups, Counseling and Psychological Services, and Services for Students with Disabilities; maintain student confidentiality
  • Use your working knowledge of career trends, curricular requirements, and graduate school entrance requirements
  • Understand and implement the core values of the National Academic Advising Association and best practices related to the advising role
  • Be a collaborative member of our team assisting with programs, workshops, group advising, educational programs and events throughout the year
  • Contribute to the design and delivery of workshops, drop-in and group advising, educational programs, etc.
  • Use good judgment while handling complex student-focused issues and initiatives across the team
  • Participate and serve on university and school-wide committees
  • Conduct degree audits, complete relevant student-related forms and update print/web resources

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 2+ years of experience related to counseling (academic, educational, personal), academic advising, student services, or student records management
  • Applied experience with project management best practices and organizational skills
  • Intermediate level proficiency using student information systems
  • Demonstrated experience supporting students from a variety of identities (both personal and social identities), cultures, backgrounds and ideologies with a commitment towards inclusion
  • Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office and Google collaboration tools
